Preschool is an ideal phase to introduce children to the concepts of numbers and counting. As young minds begin to grasp their surroundings, they naturally develop the ability to count objects and remember numbers. To enhance your little ones’ learning journey, you can foster mathematical development through a few simple activities designed for them.  We have curated a list of such activities for you. These engaging options are perfect for preschoolers and kindergartners, offering a mix of learning and play for those practising numbers or simply looking for enjoyable ways to learn.

Easy Counting and Number Activities for Preschoolers:

1. Find the Pearls

Goal of the game : Count and collect as many pearls as you can.

Materials Needed:

  1. Small, round objects resembling pearls (you can use small beads, pom-poms, or any other safe and small objects).
  2. Small containers or bowls to hold the pearls.
  3. Large playing area (indoor or outdoor).

Instructions:

To set up, scatter colourful “pearls” around the play area and keep containers or bowls at one end or in the centre. Start the activity by asking children to find and collect as many pearls as they can. You can give them 2-5 minutes to do one round of the activity. You may also play some music to keep the atmosphere light and fun. The thrill begins when you say, “Go!” prompting them to gather pearls and deposit them into their containers within a designated time frame. After the timer concludes, a counting phase follows, where the child tallies their collected pearls. The learning extension adds layers of complexity, with younger children encouraged to count aloud. This activity also enhances cognitive skills by making the children identify variations such as colour recognition and sorting according to sizes.

2. Number Towers

Goal of the activity: Build towers using number cards

Materials Needed:

  1. Number cards (you can create these by writing numbers 1-10 on cards or cutouts).
  2. Building blocks or any stackable items (Playing blocks, cups, wooden blocks, etc.).
  3. Large playing area or tables.

Instructions:

Create a delightful learning environment by setting up the “Number Towers” game. Begin by crafting number cards spanning from 1 to 10 and scattering them across a spacious table or play area. As a child selects a number card, the adventure unfolds. Elevate the educational fun by encouraging the children to organise the blocks in ascending numerical order or to count aloud as they enthusiastically build their towering structures. This engaging activity not only promotes numerical recognition but also adds an element of creativity to the learning process.

3. Roll a Flower Math Game

Goal of the game: Practise basic maths skills while assembling a colourful flower.

Materials Needed:

  1. Large sheet of paper or a whiteboard.
  2. Markers or coloured pencils.
  3. Dice.
  4. Scissors.
  5. Glue or tape.

Instructions:

Begin by drawing a substantial flower stalk on a whiteboard or a sheet of white paper. The excitement ensues as the child rolls a dice and the number revealed determines the quantity of petals they are to draw. This not only engages the child in a creative endeavour but also introduces the concept of counting and numbers to the drawing process. As each roll of the dice unfolds, a unique and vibrant flower takes shape, making the activity both entertaining and educational, seamlessly blending art and mathematics in a delightful way.
